One of the most beautiful and most famous lake towns on the Balkan Peninsula
The slopes of Prokletije and Lake Plav keep the town of Plav in an embrace. It is located in the northeastern part of Crna, at the confluence of the northern river Lim with Lake Plav and at an altitude of 910 m.
To date, it has not been determined whether it was named after the constant floods around the lake or the Roman Emperor F(P)lavius. And maybe it was named after the blue color of Lake Plav(Blue) and the reflection of the sky in the crystal clear water.
For Plav, which today has about 3.500 inhabitants, historical sources say that it had inhabitants in the Iron Age. This is best evidenced by the cave drawings of the archeological site of the Vizier's Beard. So, thanks to that site, the inhabitants of Plav, whose remains are two millennia old, have also been recorded. The earliest inhabitants were the Greeks and Romans. This was followed by the migration of the Slavs, who found the Romans and Illyrians in the area of the Gusinje-Plav basin. After their departure, mostly Illyrian-Slavic structures remained.
In the Dark Ages, the current contours of the Plav were almost non-existent. That changed during the 17th century, when the Ottoman Empire came to this area. Then, due to its good strategic position, Plav became an important center of trade, so trade had a foothold in this city.
Today, Plav is a popular tourist destination, primarily because of its surroundings, then peace and comfort.
Events that celebrate Plav and its surroundings are the popular Bostanijada, Blueberry Days as well as numerous exhibitions of paintings and photographs. In winter, due to unfavorable weather conditions, the event Prokletije bez granica is organized. This event is the central winter gathering of mountaineers from the region. Most of the ascent to Prokletije takes place during the night, so this tour is a special challenge for experienced mountaineers.
