Nikšić can boast the title of the largest municipality in the former Yugoslavia, with huge natural potential. It is about a 50-minute drive to the coast or the majestic Durmitor, which the ancient Romans said never "sleeps".
Nikšić bears this name for only 300 years, but its existence dates back to ancient times. It is a crossroads from the Roman times of Anderbe, Anagastum, and later Onogošt. It has kept this characteristic to this day. Namely, the town under Trebjesa covers the central and western part of Montenegro. At an altitude of 630 m, it occupies almost 15 percent of the territory of Montenegro. With all its characteristics, it represents a treasure trove of tourism in the form of natural, social and anthropogenic resources.
Everything in Nikšić merges into the city center, which for the first time in the history of Montenegro, is arranged according to urban European standards. The main architect of this project is the famous Josip Šilović Slade. On March 17, 1883, on the order of Prince Nikola, this man from Trogir made the first regulatory plan for a new town on the ruins of ancient Onogošt. The beginning of construction at that time "attracted craftsmen from various countries and regions, such as the Bay of Kotor, Dalmatia, Herzegovina and Italy."
Today, this heart of the city, with its surroundings attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world. Thanks to the rich cultural, nightlife and recognizable Nikšić beer, international festivals. It is like that thanks not only to the cordiality of the inhabitants, but also to the legacy of Vit Nikolić, Tin Ujević, Živko Nikolić, Mirko Kovač, Bota Nikolić, Miloš Šobajić and other world and our creators.
The unique ambient unit of the Nikšić center contains all the historical and cultural features. Visits to the Cathedral of St. Basil of Ostrog, the Palace of King Nicholas, the nearby Lapidarium, the Church of St. Peter and Paul, The Rampart will leave a complete impression and experience of this city on all visitors.
What not to miss:
Ostrog Monastery - located along an almost vertical cliff, almost at the very top of the steep Ostrog beam, built in the Renaissance style. A unique place in the world, where the relics of St. Basil of Ostrog are worshiped by members of all faiths and denominations. It consists of the Upper and Lower monasteries, and for tourists and worshipers, a walking tour between the already mentioned monasteries is especially interesting.
Crvena stijena - an archeological site from the Paleolithic era, located not far from the village of Petrovići (Nikšić municipality), near the border of Montenegro and Herzegovina. It was discovered in 1954 and is considered to be the site with the thickest cultural layer (from Musterien to the Bronze Age), the richest stratigraphic stratification on the Balkan Peninsula and extremely preserved remains of material culture, which provide a good insight into the development of Paleolithic cultures.
Bridge on Moštanica - the oldest preserved bridge in Montenegro. According to some sources, it was located on the Roman road that led from Epidaurus through Risan, Grahovo, Rijeka and Nikšić to Shkodra. The curiosity is that about ten steps from the Bridge on Moštanica towards the church, there are interesting "seats", which, according to tradition, were used by the former heads of the Moštanica town in the Roman, Byzantine and Turkish periods.
Emperor's Bridge - the most beautiful building of its kind in Montenegro. It was built in 1896, as a gift from the Russian emperor Alexander III, under the supervision and idea of the already mentioned Josip Slade. The material is made of hewn stone, with 18 colonnades, 269 m long, up to 13 meters high, from where there is a pastoral view of the huge Nikšić field.
Trebjesa - a favorite picnic spot of Nikšić. The lungs of the city, built in the flat Nikšić field, were declared a "state ban" during the reign of King Nikola. Dwellings of numerous endemic species, such as Balkan discorea, Dalmatian hyacinth, oriental buckthorn, are surrounded by well-kept 5 km long hiking and cycling trails, suitable for recreation and competitions. Not far from the top, there is the hotel "Trebjesa" or "bird with outstretched wings", the work of architect Slobodan Vukajlović, as well as a lookout that encompasses the fullness of fields with artificial lakes.
