The administrative, academic, cultural and economic center of Montenegro

Located on the banks of as many as six rivers: Morača, Ribnica, Zeta, Sitnica, Mareza and Cijevna, Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro. It is also the center of cultural, scientific, film and sports events. It was formerly called Ribnica, Zeta and Titograd.

According to assumptions, the city of Podgorica was founded in the 3rd century BC and was named after the hill Gorica, which covers the city on the north side. It is located near the remains of the Roman city of Duklja. In the Middle Ages, there was a settlement called Ribnica and under this name, the town was first mentioned in 1326. Podgorica was under a long siege by the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, attested by the numerous monuments from that period. In 1878, it became part of the Principality of Montenegro, and since 1946 it has been the administrative seat of Montenegro. It was officially called Titograd from 1946 to 1990. Podgorica became the capital of the independent state of Montenegro in 2006.

The capital is characterized by a favorable geographical position and very good traffic connections with the south and the hinterland. Its position is characterized by a relatively short distance from the airports in the country and the region. Thus, it is 12 km away from Golubovci Airport, 81 km from Tivat, and 156 km from Ćilipi. In addition to amenities such as the Mediterranean climate and a large number of sunny days a year, Podgorica is known for its cultural and historical monuments. Some of them are: the Cathedral of Christ's Resurrection, the Clock Tower, the Vizier's Bridge, the remains of the city of Duklja, etc.

The Old Town Medun is 10 km northeast of Podgorica, in the area of Kuči. It dates back to the ancient period. It was first built as a fortress and it develops into a city. The well-preserved walls of the fortification are built of bulky blocks of hewn stone, placed in several rows. Today, Medun is one of the most significant monuments of the past. This building is important for the study of cultural epochs from prehistory to the Middle Ages. At the foot of Medun lived our famous writer, Montenegrin duke and hero Marko Miljanov, who was buried in the acropolis in front of a small church on Medun.

Podgorica has great tourist potential. It offers numerous opportunities for the rich tourist content of Montenegro. Through business, transit, recreational and sports tourism it can attract a large number of tourists. The temperate climate implies mild winters and warm summers and encourages the development of viticulture in the immediate proximity of the capital.

Podgorica offers many films, art and music festivals to culture lovers. In the Montenegrin National Theater, you can see some of the plays from the current theater repertoire.

The nightlife in Podgorica is diverse and attractive. The city has many nightclubs, bars, authentic taverns and national restaurants.

What should you not miss when visiting Podgorica?

The most attractive part of the municipality of Podgorica is certainly the Skadar Lake National Park. Skadar Lake, apart from being the largest lake in the Balkans, is a habitat of wonderful flora and fauna. It has magnificent wild beaches and unspoiled nature. Thanks to the preserved ecosystem, Skadar Lake is a paradise for 280 species of birds. The symbol of the lake is the curly pelican, which is a rare species in this part of Europe. Thanks to the lush vegetation and aquatic meadows, the lake is an ideal habitat for a large number of amphibians, reptiles and mammals.

If you are a wine lover, a visit to the company July 13th - Plantations is unavoidable. In its possession is a unique vineyard with an impressive area of about 2300 hectares. The Montenegrin climate is ideal for growing authentic grape varieties from which wines of unique taste are made. Tasting on Ćemovsko polje and an unusual ride in a tourist car through the vineyard will complete this unusual experience and make every true wine lover happy.

Gorica Hill, which is located near the center of Podgorica, is a popular picnic spot and is an ideal place for recreation. The picnic area is characterized by landscaped hiking, biking and trim trails and sports fields. From the top of the hill, there is an impressive view of the city.

Adventure Park Gorica is a real adrenaline paradise for all lovers of sports activities. The park consists of five air trails, three of which are intended for children and two for the elderly. The park includes an outdoor gym, a children's playground and a cafeteria with an open bar.

Just a few kilometers from the city center, the resort Mareza is an ideal place for rest and recreation. Due to the lush vegetation and the distance from the city noise, you can enjoy the fresh air here even on the hottest days.
