Cervantes' inspiration, sandy beaches and healing legends of the Ulcinj horizon
Ulcinj is the first major city after the gates of Otrant, which welcomes with an open heart, and is also the southernmost city on the Montenegrin coast, and one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast.
The winds of the West and the Orient collided in this area, in more than two millennia old tradition. Ulcinj's beaches are also in the forefront in terms of length, the longest in Europe, and in terms of natural potential they do not fall behind world-famous destinations.
According to tradition, the Illyrians founded Ulcinj, which was primarily called Colchinium, and it was named after the tribe of Colchians (of Greek origin), who are considered to be the founders of the Ulcinj core.
The core of Ulcinj is certainly the Old Town of Ulcinj, whose ramparts extend in the very center of this coastal town. According to the architecture, the two-storey and three-storey houses of the Renaissance and Baroque style, made of stone, are typical of the Mediterranean area and the symbiosis of cultures that intertwined in the winding crowded streets and squares. Balšić Tower and Palace, Venice Palace, Slave Square, are unavoidable places for walking tours, and in a short break along the steep cliffs, you can hear the legends that testify to every inch of Ulcinj stone.
It is said that sometime in the 15th century, Miguel de Cervantes, a famous writer, was enslaved in the Old Town. It is a kind of tourist attraction, and legend has it that it is his own novel Don Quixote and the character of Dulcinea of Toboz, conceived after his enslavement in Dulcinea, as Roman sources otherwise called this city.
As this core connects tradition and modern contents, every summer on Slave Square is organized Summer scene, a manifestation of a cultural character that brings together domestic and foreign authors from the world of music, dramaturgy, literature. The Book Fair has been held for 12 years, while the Motorijada, the International Children's Festival and Pranvera ne Ana and Maliit, make up the year-round cultural and entertainment offer of the southernmost town on the Montenegrin coast.
The southernmost town on the coast gives you medicine and mystery, such as the Bay of Pinje, which is especially conducive to women's health in Ulcinj, shrouded by legends for centuries, probably because of its difficult accessibility from the mainland. This inaccessibility affected the women who, accompanied by an elderly woman from Ulcinj, came to the beach early, entered the sea and swam towards the magic stone in the central part of the bay, slipping through an aperture in the stone. This custom has lasted for centuries, and the healing properties of the Ulcinj region, with or without a legend, were recognized by the world scientist Mihailo Pupin, who wanted to open a hospital, especially emphasizing the healing sulfur waters on the legendary Women's Beach.
What to visit:
Velika plaža - or Ulcinj Copacabana, stretches from Cape Đeran to Ada Bojana. It is 13 kilometers long, with fine sand, which is said to have healing properties. In the background there are pine forests, a long shallow sea belt, and not so far away from the beach there are restaurants, playgrounds and courts.
Ada Bojana - if you ever long for the summer vacation of your dreams, Ada Bojana is the right choice. This natural complex with a specific ambient, hidden from sight, effortlessly “gets rid of negative thoughts”. Silence, the scent of sea, playing of fine sand through the fingers is what gives the visitors what they are looking for. There are numerous restaurants, bungalows, caravans and opportunities for an active vacation.
Valdanos Bay - Once the main port of Ulcinj pirates, a place of maritime battles. For those who are well versed in historical "embroidery", in the bay there are remains of long-submerged ships from the Middle Ages and Antiquity. In addition to the exciting history, this area is rich in olive trees, and often for Ulcinj, that has over 80,000 olive trees, is said to have an "olive climate". It is a vast place, with very long beaches, insulated by the dense Maki and olive trees. Speleological, archaeological tours, research of capes and hidden places are fun activities. An exciting and active vacation, right?
Djerane island - the site often called the place of "sunken amphora", "the cemetery of ships", while fishermen address it as the habitat of many valuable species of fish such as gilt, grouper, and sea bass. Since this part is fully exposed to winds and open sea waves, sailors appeal caution when navigation. However, this did not interfere with Ulcinj pirates who, in the period between the XVI - XVIII century, attacked ships, which sailed the Southern Adriatic, right from this spot.
Šasko Lake: Ulcinj Surroundings are rich with one exceptional example of freshwater surface, Šasko Lake. Various flora and fauna, a great vacation spot and again, sightseeing. It is the most suitable place for "Birdwatching".
