The capital of mountain tourism, the first ecological state and mountain eyes whose freshness is to be remembered

Vareza water - the water from the spring is drinkable, in the legends that's the place where the city is founded. Where the guests are, there are also Hanovi - as the capital of Montenegrin mountain tourism used to be called.

The spring, which was announced by the frog (mne. term žaba) from the Island, was crucial for this town in the arms of Durmitor or the "sleeping mountain" to get its final name - Žabljak. It is located at the highest altitude of the Balkan Peninsula, at 1456 meters, and is also a National Park and a popular escape from the summer heat and a great place to enjoy winter sports. It is surrounded by 23 mountain peaks, over 2,300 meters altitude, the highest of which is Bobotov kuk or Ćirova pećina (2523 m). From this Montenegrin Mount Everest, they say that in very clear, but rare mornings, you can see Belgrade.

It is experiencing its tourist rise after the Second World War, so some typical natural benefits, such as glacial lakes, picnic areas, legends and gastronomic offers, are daily improving and positioning Žabljak high on the tourist map of tourists from the country, region and the world.

Žabljak is not only the capital of Montenegrin mountain tourism, but also the capital of Montenegro as the first and only ecological state in the world, which the Montenegrin authorities decided in 1991.

For all the cities of this small country in the hilly Balkans, legends are connected, and it seems that Žabljak is at the forefront in his number of myths. It is said that the Greek Gods chose Durmitor as a resort, and the Greeks, who resided here at one time, watched a sleeping mountain as his second Olympus.

As a confirmation of the above, not far from the center, near the Devil's Lake, there is a Greek cemetery, an archeological site monumental medieval tombstones, and the medieval town of Pirlitor from the 14th century. The name of Duke Momčilo is associated with this city, and the winged horse Jabučilo threw himself into the Black Lake, from where his "cry" can still be heard, due to the betrayal of his beloved Momčilo by the unfaithful Vidosava.

The most famous glacial lake, a symbol of Durmitor and Žabljak, are mountain eyes or so called Black Lake. Legend has it that Saint Sava cursed it, because the monks of the monastery there doubted the authenticity of the Saint, wanting to deceive him. He said angrily: May the land break into where your monastery is now, that place was not called a town or a village, but it was called Black Lake. So it would be, as has been said, and today tourists from all parts of the world enjoy the beauty of these glacial eyes.

What not to miss:

Durmitor ring: Of the 23 peaks that make up the Durmitor massif, it is possible to conquer almost every one, thanks to the well-kept trails, markings, and the Durmitor ring is an exceptional Montenegrin attraction, one of the most impressive panoramic routes in the region. 76 km long, it is suitable for cycling, and the car takes about an hour and 30 minutes. As it includes the Durmitor National Park and the "Piva" Nature Park, it is possible to start from Žabljak, Šavnik or Plužine, it is suitable for hiking, so we guarantee that an hour and a half will be too little for true coverage of Durmitor and its sheer beauty.

Jablan Lake: When you "do" the usual tour around Black Lake and get used to it, the ideal recommendation for an unusual route is Jablan Lake, or the Red Beam mirror. You can reach the restaurant Momčilov grad, picking raspberries and blueberries along the way, and through the dense forest you can reach this glacial lake. As Durmitor has a large number of straits, you can go to Lake Jablan, although in spite of it, through the village of Bosača, the only permanently inhabited place in Europe, at that altitude, and again through the forest to Jablan. Although it is popularly called "Little Lake", it is still deeper than the others (8.5 m), at 1791 meters above sea level.

Škrčka jezera: For Veliko and Malo Škrčko jezero, you have to work a little harder, but the end result is justified. You will find out why the valley of Škrčka lakes is the most impressive in the domain of the Durmitor "empire". On all sides, except the northwest, where the Sušica Canyon begins, the lakes are closed by wild and swampy sides. As everywhere in this part of Montenegro, more passages lead to Škrka. From the Sušica Canyon, or across Dobro and Todor's valley. The choice is yours.

Viewpoint "Ćurevac": this is a place that is not difficult to reach and is suitable for all age groups, and the view of the Tara Canyon, the village of Tepca, where the vine grows, the Bosnian mountains and the village of Bobovo in Pljevlja, will forever remain alive in memory.
