Where to refuel if you're renting a car in Montenegro?

When renting a car, it is essential to know which type of fuel your vehicle requires, to avoid potential engine damage, insurance penalties, or incurring additional fees. Choosing the right gas station is also important for various reasons, but mainly because of the fuel quality, pricing, and availability of specific fuels. For a better travel experience, MontenegroCar suggests planning your refuelling stops in advance.

Select the Correct Fuel

Some Tips about Fuel Types and Safety Measures

Determining the type of fuel your vehicle requires and following safety measures during refuelling is crucial to ensure your vehicle's longevity and safety.

There are several ways to check the fuel type a vehicle uses. For example, you can look at the vehicle's manual, fuel door or cap, or you can look for dashboard indicators or vehicle indication number (VIN), where you will find the vehicle’s specifications. Sometimes, the name of the vehicle model has a "D" in it which means it uses diesel.

As for the safety guidelines, we recommend you always turn off the engine, avoid overfilling, and ensure the cap is securely tightened after refuelling, and, as we mentioned above, always use the correct fuel for your vehicle.

Most gas stations in Montenegro accept credit cards, but just to be sure, you should always have cash with you. All of them are also open on Sundays when all the other shops are closed, so expect it to be a bit more crowded than usual.

Gas Types

Petrol (Gasoline), often known as Benzin, is the most standard car fuel, especially for rental vehicles. It is a transparent, petroleum-derived liquid primarily used as fuel in spark-ignited internal combustion engines.

Another widespread fuel type is diesel. It offers better fuel efficiency than petrol and is generally cheaper. Diesel engines, which use this fuel, rely on the heat of compression to ignite it, rather than an external spark as in gasoline engines. Diesel engines tend to be noisier but provide more torque, making them popular for larger vehicles and those that need to haul or tow. Watch out not to fill your diesel car with petrol, as it can cause significant damage to the engine.

Diesel fuel comes in two main categories:

  • Regular Diesel: Derived from crude oil, this is the standard diesel found at many fueling stations. It's primarily used in trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles due to its efficiency and high-energy release upon combustion. However, it has a notable environmental footprint, especially regarding greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Supplemented Diesel: This variant often contains additives to improve performance (like better performance in cold conditions) and reduce environmental impact. Examples include biodiesel (made from vegetable oils or animal fats) and synthetic diesel (derived from natural gas or biomass). These are generally considered cleaner alternatives but may not be as widely available as regular diesel. Q Max Diesel is one of them and is available at Petrol Gas Stations (Look at the map below for locations of Petrol gas stations).

Lately, electric and hybrid cars have been gaining in popularity, as they represent a shift towards sustainable transportation, aiming to reduce gas emissions and dependency on fossil fuels. Electric cars (EVs) run solely on electric power, sourced from a battery pack, and require charging from external electric sources. In contrast, hybrid vehicles combine a conventional internal combustion engine with an electric motor, which means they can run on petrol or electricity.
